As I was leaving for work this morning, I was blessed with the sounds of yet another argument between Emily and Riley … it went something like this:
Emily: RILEY GET UP – NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
(see Riley has asked Emily to wake him up every morning, but when she does … he yells at her)
Riley: I AM UP! GET OUT OF MY ROOM!
Emily: You told me to wake you up and this is the second time that I have told you to get up.
Riley: I AM UP! GET OUT OF MY ROOM! SHUT UP!
Emily: YOU SHUT UP!
Riley: YOU SHUT UP!
Emily: YOU SHUT UP!
Riley: YOU SHUT UP!
Me: BOTH OF YOU SHUT UP!
Yes, I used to be one of those parents who swore that I would never tell my kids to “Shut Up” … well I also thought that I was too classy to drink wine from a box … and we know how that turned out.
The whole conversation reminded me of these wise words from Derek.
