Rescued Furniture

After Rachel moved out (and yes, we are horrible people for allowing our daughter to move out … blah blah blah) we moved the kids into different rooms (we tried to move them into rooms across town, but those people kindly asked us to not dump our kids on their front porch and then they mentioned something about a restraining order) and in that process Derek and I lost our nightstands.  Why?  Because that is what parents do.  We go without new clothes so the kids can have shoes for gym.  We go without dinners at fancy restaurants so the kids can have lunch money for school …. and we go without nightstands so that our daughters can paint ours hot pink and orange (guaranteeing that we will NEVER want them back).

So our quest for the perfect nightstands began …. and quickly ended when we discovered that new nightstands can cost between $200 and $40,000 each.  What the heck?

…. until I happened up on a wonderful ad on Craiglist for refinished furniture, which had a link to this website

http://www.junkyardpainting.com

She didn’t have nightstands or a dresser to go with them at the time, but she told me that she would keep an eye out for them ….. and a few weeks ago – SHE FOUND SOME!  So she shoved that eye back into her head and she sent me an e-mail.

I picked out the color, finish, and drawer pulls (oh sure, I asked Derek his opinion, but we all know how that goes) ….. and now she is done with them!

She also found headboards for the twins that she is going to add a funky zebra pattern to.

I AM SOOOOOOOO EXCITED!  We are going to pick them up next Saturday.  I have been saving money for months in order to get them and the time is almost here.

Plus I love the idea of saving furniture and turning it into beautiful pieces AND the prices on it are about a quarter of what you would pay for new.

If you know anybody in the Oklahoma City area (especially designers), please send them the link to this post and her website.

Nice… Very Nice. I applaud your choice. I have a plethora of nightstands but am lacking in other essential quality furnishings. One day.. when my kids are grown.. (sung to the tune somewhere over the rainbow) I will have nice furniture.

Oh I know what you mean about having the nice furniture with kiddos – they just don’t mix. We could probably use a new sofa and we soooo need new carpet upstairs, but there is no way that we are buying those things until they all move out. NO WAY !!!!

ohhh.. new carpet.. smooshy wonderful soft new carpet.. I covet it.. alas.. I live on a working farm, three kids, 5 dogs..all of them messy and dirty… I dream about new carpet… bright vivid HOT new carpet dreams… (sigh…) and we simply won’t even talk about a new couch.. I. just. cannot…

You should see me in a furniture store. Derek has to peel my fingers out of the sofa arms so that we can leave. I covet a new sofa, but know that I can’t have it …. but when I do finally get one, I probably won’t even allow Derek to sit on it. I MIGHT let him look at it. I said MIGHT!

I have no decent furniture. Erma Bombeck was right that when the kids leave home, they take everything and leave you with nothing. I have one son left at home, maybe if I buy ugly stuff, I will get to keep some of it? Maybe…

I will be more than happy to give mine our crappy stuff …. they were the ones that made it crappy in the first place and then I can go out and get brand new shiny things!

Our couch, computer desk, and dining table were all Craig’s List freebies, but I really like the idea of rescuing furniture!

I’d also like to use the dining table for actual dining. Right now, it’s where my electric piano lives, plus a bunch of sheet music and CDs. I’ve been eating on the couch for a year.
