Teaching New Dogs New Tricks

Derek told me the other day that he saw somebody from high school that we both know.  We actually know his whole family and Derek seeing him gave me a brilliant idea.  I know … I know … all of my ideas are brilliant, but this one shines with the brilliance of a bazillion diamonds.  Yes, it IS that good!

Anywho …. this man and his family raise and train border collies for herding.  So I e-mailed them and asked if Emily (the animal loving twin … not Beth, the animal “ew gross” twin) could help with the training and care of the animals a few times a week …. AND THEY SAID “YES” !!!

I told Emily about it this morning.  She is so excited.  Derek and I are thinking that her training, taking care of, and being around that many dogs might make her think twice about wanting one so bad …. of course with our luck, this plan will completely backfire and she will want a dozen Border Collies.  Oh well … we tried.

That is a fantastic idea! I, too, hope it doesn’t backfire.

Lo used to volunteer at the animal shelter, an experience she really enjoyed. Of course her time was spent playing with the animals rather than cleaning up after them so really she just wanted to bring them all home with her.

I think that it’s going to be hard work, but she can do it. The couple trains dogs to be serious working dogs, so Emily is going to have to take it seriously.

Well, when you cave, she will no all about caring for them. ;)

I am hoping that she will see how much work it can be, but also learn how to care for them at the same time.

She is really excited about it. I am hoping that we can take her out there at least once a week for a few hours at a time.

Border Collies are incredibly intelligent sweet natured dogs. I have always been a very strong advocate for giving a child an animal to take care of to help teach them empathy and responsibility… i think that getting her that job was a great move on your part. unfortunately, Border collies ARE great dogs, and if you wanted to dissuade her from falling in love with canines, i’da chosen Schnauzers or some kind of over-bred yippy lap dog. *shrugs* but i have two dogs in my house who i love very dearly, so i’m a little biased… good luck with your plans. ;)

The couple also has rescues every once in a while and I told her that if she had rescue dogs that were smaller then we might be able to adopt them. We really don’t have room for a Border Collie.

A dog? A dog. I gave in. And now? The dog is mine to look after…. Good luck with the plan!!
