A few months ago Rachel had to go to the emergency room. Nothing serious and luckily she has insurance. However, she doesn’t really understand how insurance works and assumed that insurance would pay all of it. We told her otherwise … several times.
She started getting bills from the doctors. She started getting bills from the hospital. We told her to call the doctors and set up a payment plan. We told her to call the hospital and set up a payment plan. She didn’t … and they just sent more bills.
This has been going on for a few months. We say that we’re not going to say anything about it to her, but then we do …. until last night.
She came over to eat dinner with us and informed us that her sort of boyfriend explained everything to her and that she was going to call the hospital today and set up payment arrangements.
WHAT ??? HAVEN’T WE BEEN TRYING TO TELL YOU THIS FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS ??
Evidently when we, the parents, speak it comes out sounding like Charlie Brown’s teacher (wah wa wa wah wah wa wa wa), but when the all knowing sort of boyfriend speaks the heavens open up and golden beams of sunlight burn his all knowing words into her brain.
If you need me, I’ll just be over here beating my head against the wall, but not hard enough to cause any real injury, because me too stupid to understand how health insurance works.
