Minding Oprah’s Business

I overheard a fairly heated conversation the other day between two women who have never gone without much of anything.  They were complaining about how Oprah donates so much money to charities and schools in other countries and how she should donate that money here (in the USA).  I just sat and listened to their theories on the problems of this country and how “us” donating to other countries contributes to our problems.

It went on and on.

The thought that popped into my little brain at the time was to ask them how much money THEY donated to local charities.  I refrained from asking, but oh how I wanted to.

As I was reading the latest issue of Oprah’s magazine this morning, there was a quote from her last speech at the graduation of the school she sponsors in Africa …. and it occurred to me that she is doing great things and who says that those great things have to be in our own backyard? I wouldn’t want anybody telling me where I should give my money or whom I should give it to …. so why does it matter where Oprah gives hers?

We might not have her millions to give, but we have enough to give of ourselves and that doesn’t have to be cash money.  It can be our talents.  I can be our good thoughts and prayers.  It can be our time.

Derek and I give monthly to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Blessings in a Backpack.  They are wonderful charities that do fabulous work and we feel that our money is well spent in helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

The point is that we shouldn’t be worried about how or where somebody else gives, we should just be willing to give.
