You know me and my weird little research projects … well here is another one. After watching TV the other day and spending some quality time screaming at the antidepressant ads (especially the ones for Abilify that tell you that if your AD isn’t working then add another one …. OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH MYYYYYYYYYYYYY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH !!!! if the antidepressants aren’t working then why in the hell would you want to take another one?), it hit me that I have been seeing quite a few ads in magazines lately for meds … which made me wonder how many ads there are for meds in magazines. So I counted them. Keep in mind that I subscribe to a lot of magazines so I had plenty of them on hand for my little experiment … here are the results
Reader’s Digest … 33 (can you tell who they cater to?)
Redbook … 25 (I don’t know who they are targeting here … the overworked mother perhaps?)
More … 18 (most of these ads were for menopausal things … because we have to cure that whole menopause thing … geez … the next thing you know we will have a cure for breathing, because that whole in and then out and then in and then back out thing just takes up way too much time)
Oprah … 13 (I was actually somewhat shocked that her magazine didn’t have more ads …. Big Pharma is a huge sponsor of hers … hmmmm … maybe that explains some things)
Glamour … 11 (most of these ads were for birth control …. because every twenty-something has to be on birth control and running the streets being all crazy like … actually birth control in and of itself kind of scares me … there are bigger germs out there than sperm … young lady!)
People … 7 (this was also surprisingly low … BUT this is a weekly magazine and it’s page numbers are considerably lower than monthly issues)
and the winner is ….
Marie Claire with ZERO ads !!! Nada … Zilch … Not a one !! As painful as it is for me to write this (they were the ones who rejected my article) … I am proud of them for not taking Big Pharma money … so I guess that means that I have to renew my subscription even though my article won’t be in it …. just trying to think of the bigger picture here.
So, my point is …. write letters to the editors of your favorite magazines and strongly discourage them from taking Big Pharma money … thanks and have a mediocre day 😉
